Arcade version of the NES classic in which you point your light gun at the screen and try to shoot all the ducks flying about the screen in groups of 2 or 3 at a time. You only have 3 bullets to nail them so aim carefully. If you shoot 2 your dog will rise out of the weeds and proudly show you he caught them. If you miss, he will laugh at you-- one of the most annoying things NES gamers can remember about all the games for that system! If you do miss one duck a "pistol" symbol is taken away from you, and 2 ducks missed takes away 2. When your pistol symbols run out your game ends. After enough duck groups have passed and you still have pistol symbols left, you will face groups of clay pigeons! These seem easier to me because of their much more predictable flight pattern. Same rules apply here for success, though your dog does not appear in this scenario. Pass this and you play a bonus round in which you shoot as many ducks as possible with unlimited ammo-- but your DOG also jumps about.. shooting him ends the round, though you still get a bonus for all the ducks you shot. Yep-- YOU CAN SHOOT THE ANNOYING AS F*** DOG IN THIS VERSION OF DUCK HUNT!!! He gets a burnt face, crutches and a cast and pleads, "Shoot the ducks, not me!". Maybe you shouldn't have laughed at me, you little shit! :) Later on groups of 3 ducks will appear at a time and they'll be faster and have more unpredictable flight patterns. The NES version was both by itself and as a pack-in along with Super Mario Bros. on the same cartridge, and the Zapper was the preferred light gun for that game. In the NES version you can choose from 3 different modes at the title screen: A) 1 Duck, B) 2 Ducks, and 3) Clay Pigeon Shooting-- yep; you can play the ducks OR clay pigeons but not both. Also, you get a perfect bonus if you don't miss any ducks/pigeons (the VS. version should have had this). There is also no bonus stage, and the dog doesn't mock you if you at least bag one duck. The pistol "life bar" is not present; you must simply shoot enough ducks to advance. Lastly, different colored ducks will appear among the standard black ones, and these are worth more. Both versions are instant classics, but with all light gun games, can be very hard for some people to get used to (hey, did my hand just raise?).
