Wai Wai World. Interesting game. Coming in, I didn't think I was going to be playing a cryptic-style metroidvania game, but yeah, that is what it is. You have eight playable characters from the Konami franchise, some of whom you won't likely recognize as they are from some of their Japan-only titles. They also snuck in a couple you may recognize, like King Kong and Mikey from The Goonies. He and Mikey were replaced in the mobile version that was released in Japan in 2006, likely due to expired licensing. I know nothing about that version, but I can tell you about this version. There are six levels; you go through them, saving characters that you will then be able to play as. Scattered through the levels, you will find items to power up your characters or ones that unlock their sub-weapons, which I am not sure you need but may prove useful. Beyond that, the gameplay is going to feel a lot like Castlevania, and in the end, they will throw in a shmup level where you get to choose two of Konami's famous ships, Gradius or the Twin Bee. The last level is really laggy and miserable; it's not a joy to be a part of, and beware of failing or delaying in the escape sequence; it's a very tight window, and if you fail it, guess what? You do the entire last level over again, including the shmup part. Oof. In the end, the game feels like a slog, like Star Tropics or something. I would probably give this game a 6. If you know what you're doing, maybe a 6.7 or so. The most welcoming thing was the shmup level and some familiar-looking Konami sprites and tunes. I wouldn't go out of my way for this one, but it does get some love from Japan and some enthusiasts. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/latenightretro
