Ai Senshi Nicol was released only in Japan by the retro powerhouse Konami, and damn, is it a unique little game. It is very reminiscent of the overhead worlds in Blaster Master, but way better done. The controls are much tighter, so control-wise, think about Gremlins 2 on the NES if you ever played that. Starting slow and giving off the fear of a mazy, frustrating game soon dissipates after level one, as the levels feel like they become more intuitive and easier to navigate even though they become larger. I would gather that this is because of solid game design. One of the things outside the main screens you will find are traps that drop you into lava bits or down another level where you will battle your way out. Generally, this happens because of missed jumps or rotten enemies, but it's not always half bad being in these so-called traps; sometimes you will find items down there that will help your progress. You can collect and stack items that will help with the overall power and movement of your character. I found a lot casually, but if you're a more diligent explorer, you will find yourself a more fierce competitor against the final boss than I was, and he doesn't really mess around. He will be truly the hardest boss you fight in the game, with the boss capable of ending you in a few fell swoops. Before him, though, enjoy some good tunes as you explore and find 3 diamonds in each of the 7 levels to progress to the glorious end, and as you may have guessed, rescue the love of your life, who looks a little like you. Perhaps some good ol incestual love is happening in this game. Translated, the game is called Love Warrior Nicol. And maybe it takes a warrior to one day marry your sister...probably not, but anyway, the game is a 10/10, took me under 5 hours, and provided a lot of fun. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/latenightretro
