Walk Souls [02-II] - Dark Souls II, Forest of Fallen Giants 1
This video goes through FoFG up to before we go to the boss. We talk about the different ways of experiencing the forest fort - looking at how the game articulates these ways through the mostly-linear level (with a few side areas so far, and two shortcuts returning us to near the second bonfire).
Some notes are - this level has a variety of environments, going from riverside woody forest, to a circular structure overrun by plants, to inner hallways that seem not super destroyed by time, to cozy spaces, then fort roofs, as well as grassy corridors going through these forts - little courtyards, repurposed rooms , and a place overlooking the sea, ruined by time - a large rectangular space. As well as a room looking downwards into danger from fire.
These give many ways for 'experiencing a fort' - approaching it from afar, seeing it from afar, climbing nito it, going through its hallways, climbing on top of its roofs, walking through its courtyards.
We also have a sense of distance from Majula (the hub world) immediately upon entering, from how the foliage changes and the distant Drangleic Castle becomes more visible.
For one, this area is mostly linear, but no more so than say Undead Burg (which only contains one big shortcut). FoFG part one (from the entrance from Majula, to the fight with The Last Giant), does loop in on itself twice to help the run between bonfire 2 and the boss.
