[WarioWare D.I.Y.] Custom Micro Minigame #2
I decided to see if I could make Donkey Kong '94 in WarioWare D.I.Y. and it turned out pretty well! (Download this minigame here: http://www.freewebs.com/sm64provider/MIO/COIN%20GAME.mio)
This is a game I've recently gotten into and I wish I would've given it a go when it came out in 2009 as it is an amazing game that not only gets you into game making, but it does it SO well. It also comes with a music editor that has the most user friendly controls I've ever seen, better than Mario Paint, I am completely blown away by the level of care put into this game, as have I been Wario games in general.
One of the cool features of this game is the ability to share games with friends, locally (with all possible options to transfer, DS to DS, DS to Wii, Wii to DS, Wii to Wii) and online (discontinued as of 2013). The Wii version of the game doesn't allow you to create Games/Music/Comics, but it does have exclusive minigames, expanding upon the vast amount of content the DS already has to offer, at a fraction of the cost (I'm assuming the DS game new was £30, and the Wii version is 800 points (1,000 points = £7?))
The graphics design tool is really good too, allowing you to switch from free hand, to zoomed in pixel by pixel editing with a grid enabled. The application has Mario Paint inspired paint bucket options, and varying sizes stamps make creating art assets/scenery a breeze, although the palette of colours themselves is a bit limited (only one shade of each colour), but shading can be achieved using various dithering techniques.
I wish I would have given this a go when it first came out, because I remember avoiding it thinking it was a game that presented you with a blank slate, telling you to make games, and the idea sounded lazy and pointless. But instead what you get is an ordinary WarioWare game with the usual characters, you play their minigames, you can EDIT their minigames, fill in template minigames by submitting graphics which actually eases you into the game making aspect, it has brilliant tutorials, an amazing music editing app which also allows you to import music from minigames, a comic maker, and every now and then while you're playing, you'll receive new music to listen to and comics (the same way Super Mario Maker works with its tool bar, but THIS IS A MUCH BETTER USE OF THAT WHOLE 'waiting' CONCEPT) it's as if the game is alive, and the characters are submitting new content in real time.
In short, if you like video games and want to make minigames semi-easily, get this game
