Okay, this almost made me switch to a different game before BG 3 EA releases on October 6th, 2020.
I was lucky that a simple reboot fixed the problem. but the game has a ton of bugs and balancing issues. Hopefully, if this happens to you it is also a simple fix. So far my 3rd run is filled with problems but my first 2 were pretty smooth. minus the absurd load times.

I wonder if I had saved after the bug if I would have been able to recover my save file.
