In 2012, Chicago is the first city to implement ctOS, a powerful computing network that connects all devices into one system. Blume, a technology company, is behind this groundbreaking creation. While Aiden Pearce and his mentor Damien Brenks are pulling off an electronic heist at the prestigious Merlaut Hotel, they accidentally set off an alarm set by another hacker. Damien's attempt to locate the hacker exposes their presence. Terrified for his family's safety, Aiden quickly whisks them away to the countryside pretending it's a surprise trip. However, their escape is disrupted when hitman Maurice Vega attacks, causing a devastating car crash that claims the life of Aiden's six-year-old niece, Lena. A year later, Aiden finally locates Vega at a baseball stadium but fails to uncover the identity of the person who hired him. Leaving Vega in the hands of his partner, the hired fixer Jordi Chin, Aiden pays a visit to his sister Nicole and nephew Jackson to celebrate the latter's birthday. Unfortunately, he discovers that someone is tormenting them. With the assistance of Clara Lille, a member of the hacking group DedSec, which aims to expose Blume's corrupt practices, Aiden tracks down the harasser. It turns out to be Damien, who sought Aiden's help in finding the other hacker from the Merlaut job. However, Aiden adamantly refuses to assist him.
