Extremely OK Games celebrated Celeste's 6th anniversary in January by releasing Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain, which features a 3D reimagining of Forsaken City.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this come out; I'm late in getting to it because I was buried in another franchise at the time.

Don't be fooled by the name; this isn't confined to N64 console limits, and clearly takes inspiration from multiple generations of Mario games: Mario 64 for the general level of geometry detail and some of the musical instrument choices, Mario Sunshine for the challenge levels, and Mario Odyssey for the style of strawberry placement and fanfare.

3D platformers are rather infamous for falling prey to issues with either player or camera controls; given how good the controls were in 2D Celeste, I was very curious to see how the same dev team would fare in 3D. The controls aren't bad per se, but the kind of precision Celeste typically demands tends to require being able to understand your distance to objects along multiple axes, and in some instances it seems impossible to have all of the information you'd like at a given moment, because your camera angle will inevitably complicate or collapse one or more reference angles.

One fascinating detail about this game - other than the fact it's open-source - is that it uses the same map format as Quake. I definitely saw a few Quake mappers immediately show interest in tinkering around with this game. Wiedo has already released a custom set of maps, with help from a couple of other community members, so I'm looking forward to checking that out as well.
