Gatekeeper Demo Playthrough (Steam Next Fest Feb. 2024)
2If you've ever wished Risk of Rain had a top-down shooter installment, then this game is for you, because that's pretty much what this is.
The demo includes 4 character classes (2 of which need to be unlocked) and 2 planets (out of an eventual 12), where you will progress through multiple types of levels - some of which simply require killing all enemies, while others involve activating monoliths with keys dropped by enemies, or activating totems which require staying in their immediate vicinity while enemies constantly attack and the totem spawns other traps. And of course, there are boss monsters ("sirens" in this game).
The gameplay seems pretty decent. I do think visual clarity could be improved in some respects - especially on the second planet in the demo, where some of the environments are extremely dark, golems can be hard to see and the rocks they throw even moreso, and every so often I end up snagging against non-traversible bits of terrain that are easy to overlook when you're concentrating elsewhere. It is possible to loop the levels in the demo, at which point things get way more hectic and maybe a little too flashy, which can become somewhat harsh on the eyes, because the threats you're focusing on stand out way less than all of the bullets and explosions flying around.
The demo leaves rather significant questions unanswered around how this game will scale. Will the full version expect one run to span all of the game's planets? This would result in runs lasting multiple hours and I don't know that they're resumable. How quickly will runs start feeling too samey? Aside from trying out different character classes, the novelty wears off somewhat quickly in the demo.
If nothing else, this demo reminds me that I haven't touched Risk of Rain 2 in years and barely touched it even then when it was in early development. I should probably get back to that at some point.
