Darksiders II (Deathinitive) first playthrough, part 8
We've got one realm and one key to go, before we can open the giant door to the endgame.
00:00 - Shadow's Edge
1:47:37 - Endgame
2:05:10 - Sidequest cleanup
Shadow's Edge is a lot like Lostlight, except even more minimal and brief, if you can believe it. It consists solely of The Black Stone, one final dungeon, where we're going to confront a familiar face...
The end of Darksiders 2 feels just as rushed as Darksiders 1, if not even more so. Surprise, here's Samael and we're going to fight him... meanwhile there was absolutely zero plot setup for this whatsoever and he just comes and goes in a matter of minutes. And once we have the second key... it's off to fight Absalom, again with very little setup or wrap-up afterwards.
I have to wonder how much of this was rushed, vs. how much of it was intentional to leave room for future games.
After completing the game, I went back to wrap up some of the sidequests - namely, the ones involving optional bosses, which are now far more manageable as I seem to be overleveled for most of them. The ridiculous part is that one of them resides in an optional dungeon that I was apparently meant to encounter right near the beginning of the game, and accidentally overlooked entirely.
I was also hoping to check out the Arbiter's Maze, but that ended up being an excruciatingly dull experience which ended in disaster when the sound glitched out and restarting the game to fix it meant I lost all of my progress.
Ultimately, I have to say that Darksiders 1 was the better game. I absolutely should have loved Darksiders 2 on paper. I do think the expansive environments of the Forge Lands and the Kingdom of the Dead are super cool. However, the ARPG elements ended up being a pointlessly annoying slog - which is saying a lot, since I like ARPGs. I should've been put off by how minimal the final 2 realms were, but honestly I was just ready for the game to be over.
