This game's trailer very quickly gained attention for clearly being inspired by Mega Man (and other games already inspired by Mega Man). Its mechanics feel like somewhat of a mix between Azure Striker Gunvolt and, dare I say it, Mighty No. 9.

Don't be frightened by the MN9 reference, though - to be clear, this demo is quite promising, and not bad by any means. The mechanics seem to flow together pretty well for the most part. The one mechanic I ran into issues with was jumping off of / away from walls, as it seems that the moment you stop holding toward the wall, you fall completely, and jumping away from walls is accomplished by just pressing away...usually? It felt somewhat inconsistent. Relatedly, there seemed to be a somewhat surprising automatic ledge-vaulting mechanic, that may or may not have been implemented on purpose, but I pretty much never intended on doing it. I hope these wrinkles are something the developer can work on addressing, as the rest of the movement feels pretty good.

The game offers two modes: modern and retro, with modern roughly mapping to a casual difficulty with unlimited retries. In addition to limited lives (and the presence of 1-ups), retro mode claims to involve tougher enemies, but I barely noticed a difference in enemy strength or durability when I tried it, so I'm not entirely sure how much changes.

Berserk Boy also touts metroidvania elements, though I was honestly a bit confused in how inconsistently it seems to treat revisits. Resistance members you've already saved and badges you've already gathered persist, but for some reason you lose access to fast travel points within the level and have to run through the entire level again, which makes revisiting more annoying than you'd expect after having unlocked them in your first run through each level. I'd guess fast travel gets locked to preserve some amount of integrity in level times, but that's already out the window anyway since you don't have to re-collect all resistance members and badges, so there is no true "100%" level playthrough unless there's no need to ever revisit the level and you find everything the first time.
