Nintendo has gone through a lot over the years. From the glory days of saving the entire gaming medium with the NES and Famicom, to the weirder systems like the Wii and Wii U which history seems to be judging more harshly, to their re-emergence with the handheld hybrid Switch, Nintendo has been all over the map in terms of public reception with their consoles. One generation Nintendo might dominate, but then find themselves in the back of the pack in the next generation.

One thing that has remained constant throughout their lifespan though is their tendency to choose accessibility and fun-factor over just about everything else- even power. There are some exceptions to this though. The GameCube was arguably the most powerful console of its generation, and the Nintendo 64 was no slouch as it ran many games better than the PlayStation despite its inferiorities in other areas, but overall, Nintendo has willingly taken a backseat to Sony, Sega, and Microsoft with console power in order to keep production costs of games down and minimize price tags for consumers.

This has earned them a reputation of being the console that puts fun first, and while that can put them in a position where they are giving up ground to their competitors in some areas, being known as the fun console is never a total loss, as there are always going to be a huge chunk of gamers that agree with that philosophy. Even still, what if Nintendo were to leave that philosophy behind, and release a console that beats even the Xbox Series X in terms of raw power?
