In what is huge gaming news, Microsoft has just announced that it will acquire “Call of Duty” publisher Activision Blizzard through a staggering almost $70-billion-dollar deal. This is the largest acquisition in gaming history, by far. For a while, Microsoft has been acquiring some of the most well-known companies in gaming in order to bolster its Game Pass service as well as the Xbox brand in general. But this news will likely taste bittersweet to most Xbox loyalists, as Activision/Blizzard has been involved in multiple notable controversies, including, most recently, widespread allegations sexual harassment and employee discrimination within the company. Only time will tell if Microsoft’s influence will be able to lead Activision/Blizzard down a less problematic path. But, controversy aside, this means that some of the most lucrative franchises in gaming history will likely soon become Xbox exclusives, pushing even more gamers to game pass and the Xbox ecosystem. It seems that Microsoft is taking its series systems and the current generation of gaming very seriously and is not afraid to put absurd amounts of money into competing with Sony and the PlayStation brand.
