What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy by James Paul Gee -- VGBC
This book made me think about what I’ve learned from video games. What I kept thinking about, concerning the games I played, was how I would want to act out the games on the playground or in the woods. It was interesting to think about all of these things while I was reading this.
One thing James brings up is the idea of a “good game.” Throughout the book, he gives us the examples of what he believes a good game is. This was something I had a bit of an issue with because each person has a different idea of what good is. However, given what James is talking about, I can see what he is talking about as far as people learning through the game. A lot of his principles can be transferred to other genres. Most of the examples used in this book are role playing games.
I think my favorite parts were about old learning vs new learning. This came across more like using video games, or other forms of interactive media, to supplement the more traditional classroom learning. I think this works because of how some people learn differently from others.
