Ayrton Senna famously faced many battles when attempting to improve the safety of Formula One in the early 1990s

Martin Donnelly suffered horrendous injuries after a terrible crash at Jerez in 1990 which mentally scarred Ayrton from that point onwards. Miraculously, Donnelly survived the crash but his F1 career was over. Senna became very supportive of Donnelly in his road to recovery, but from that point onwards his outlook on racing had changed forever.

Ayrton would find himself fighting for driver safety this time with the FIA during a driverโ€™s pre-race meeting where he pleaded for tyre barriers to be removed at the chicane at Hockenheim. He got his wish, and immediately the change took effect.

Sadly for Senna, safety standards were never improved enough to save him before his death at the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, but his efforts to change the mindset of the sport had a lasting impact that is still felt today.
