Despite being such a simple concept, and with what would seem like limited ability to tell a story and to convey personality, Valve's Portal franchise is wildly popular. It's incredibly accessible, with a simple concept based around solving a gauntlet of puzzles using the opening of portals to transport objects in space.

If Portal itself isn't partially responsible for bringing gaming to the mainstream, then it would certainly be even more popular in today's climate, as the audience for gaming continues to expand and shows no signs of stopping. But for such a well-loved series, why are there only two main releases? Are there even plans for Portal 3?
