This is a slim motherboard from a console that was bought for a couple bucks. It had the red (dot) of death. I reflowed the GPU and southbridge and it worked! ..then it didn't. It would get so warm and then the screen would go blank. I came to the conclusion that there was excess flux underneath the chips. I planned on flushing it repeatedly with alcohol while heating it up- but I didn't feel like it a few days ago.

Then I got to thinking, well, I have this ultrasonic cleaner at my disposal that I've never used. Gave it a shot. Dunked it for about 35 minutes then blew out all of the ports and underneath the chips with an air compressor. While doing this, I noticed that some flux made its' way out from under the chips. So I went with my initial plan, heating up the chips while rinsing it with alcohol. I did this on each side of the chips and it came out but now it was on the board. So back into the parts washer it went for another 35 minutes. Flipped the board, gave it another five minutes. Pulled it out, put the air hose to all of the components again. Heated up the board all over again and decided to give it a shot.

Now, beforehand I had it all modded and ready to go. So before it went into the parts washer the wires and post-fix adapter I installed had to be removed and later reinstalled. So I did all of that again. Reapplied thermal paste. I was actually a bit annoyed with removing it the first time since I just put new stuff on and MX-5 is $40 a tube, man! Anyway, did it, got it all out of the way. Popped in Skyrim, turned the fan speed down to let it heat a bit faster. It got up to 70c without any problems. So looks like mission accomplished. Hoor-ah!
