Why Final Fantasy Remasters are Always So Broken
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered has arrived, and...hmm. Square-Enix has made some very interesting choices with porting the game to modern consoles.
Part of this was always going to be inevitable. Crystal Chronicles' design is so heavily inspired by the technology that it was built for, with each player enjoying their own mini second screen for gameplay. To be honest, if there was ever a platform that would have suited a solid Crystal Chronicles remaster, it was the Wii U.
Instead, the Switch and PS4 versions of the game (I only mentioned the Switch version because statistically speaking, that's the console you play most if you're reading this) don't have local co-op at all, forcing you to play online.
This is such a weird direction to take the game in, but this is far from the first time that Square-Enix has botched a re-release of a classic Final Fantasy game. Somehow, every single game in the series, when re-released, ported, or remastered, seems to have some kind of deal-breaker error, glitch, or missed opportunity.
The reason for this? Well, Square-Enix's business practices are its own, so we wouldn't want to speculate too heavily. One thing we do know for certain is that the company is extremely bad at game preservation, and routinely loses development assets - including the source code for Final Fantasy VII's initial PC port - without having a clue where they've gone.
As such, it's unsurprising that remasterd and re-releases always end up having game-breaking bugs or glitches. The fact that Square-Enix (or, let's be honest, third party companies like Virtuos) gets these games to run on new systems at all is a bit of a miracle.
The weird decisions with Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered are merely the latest in a long line of occasions where Square-Enix has failed to take remasters seriously until after people complain. Does that mean this remaster will get a fix in future? Who knows! For now though, it's a shame that such a fun and creative game has received such poor treatment at the hands of its creator.
Thanks for tolerating my voice this video! BretonStripes is away visiting family so I had to fill in for her. She'll be back next week.
It's kind of fitting that I made this video, since one of the few Kotor's Soapbox videos I made before giving up on that kind of content was actually all about how Crystal Chronicles could have worked, had it been handled a bit better.
Anyway, stay safe! We're rooting for your success in whatever you're trying to achieve (unless you're trying to hurt people, of course).
Lots of love,
