Why There Are No New Sonic Games in 2020

The Sonic Games Drought is real. As far as we're currently aware Sega has decided not to release any games starring the Blue Blur in 2020 - unless, of course, the company pulls a complete surprise out of a hat and delivers Sonic Adventure 3 in time for Christmas, but this is somewhat unlikely.

So why aren't Sega pushing out a new Sonic game? Well, there are several factors. For one thing, with Sonic's 30th anniversary on the horizon next year, Sonic Team are focusing on getting ready for this special event.

Meanwhile, Sega has decided not to release a quicker, rushed game in order to give that anniversary title more development time.

Plus, Sonic sales are still strong despite a dearth of new titles.

Besides, Sega is in a period of transition at the moment, trying out bringing more games to PC as well as reshuffling their internal staff, and debuting Phantasy Star Online 2 in the West. There's a lot going on besides Sonic for Sega's higher ups to worry about.

We're not going to pretend to have any special insight, or to know when a new Sonic game will come. We thought we had everything figured out a few months ago, and it turns out we were very wrong.

Now, we're willing to just sit back, relax, and wait.

And hey, SAGE 2020 is just around the corner. Fan games are better than official ones anyway!
