Well, it’s finally happened: Minecraft Steve (and Alex, and Zombie, and Enderman) is in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Perhaps the most desperately requested character of all time has made it into the Fighter’s Pass 2 DLC.

Masahiro Sakurai is not coy about how much work this was, and he does give off the vibe that he might not have been totally on board with the decision. Apparently, Nintendo said jump, and, after complaining a bit that it was impossible, Sakurai did it anyway.

Poor guy. He needs a holiday.

The inclusion of Minecraft in Smash is the latest development in the ongoing relationship that is blossoming between Microsoft and Nintendo.

It makes sense that the two companies are getting increasingly friendly – after all, neither of them are really in competition with each other. The Switch is more in competition with tablets like the iPad than with home consoles, as many consumers are willing to have both a Switch and an Xbox or PlayStation in their home.

At the same time, Microsoft isn’t worried about Switch sales hurting their own console’s presence in the market – going forward, Xbox is fighting more against Google and Amazon’s games streaming services than against other hardware manufacturers.

Minecraft is the game that brought these two companies together. The pair brokered a deal to get Minecraft onto the Wii U, and following its success, there’s been increased cooperation between Nintendo and Microsoft.

With Xbox characters such as Banjo Kazooie and Cuphead already represented in Smash, it was only a matter of time before Minecraft Steve got thrown into the mix.

The big question now is, will this be the big surprise reveal of Fighter’s Pass 2? Or are Masahiro Sakurai and his team at Sora Ltd still slaving away, bringing another big shocker to the game.

Waluigi? Goku? The Grinch?

…Nah, probably not.

Stay safe!
