Why Martin Odegaard shouldn't have gone to Real Madrid
Martin Odegaard was supposed to be the next big thing. He had made his senior international debut with Norway just shy of a decade ago at the age of 15.
A year later he became Real Madrid’s youngest player after a €4m switch.
There followed, however, a time in the wilderness. Odegaard would play just 11 times over eight years for Los Blancos and would be routinely farmed out to the likes of Heerenveen, Vitesse and Real Sociedad.
He has finally landed himself a permanent move, to Arsenal, and both player and club have reaped the rewards of regular football. What if he rebuffed Real’s advances, stayed in Norway, and allowed his game to flourish?
