How Zinedine Zidane was nearly a Barcelona player
Johan Cruyff was in his final throes as Barcelona manager, Zinedine Zidane was his final managerial target and one of the brightest prospects in global football.
Whilst Cruyff would be sacked at the end of the 1995-96 season, perhaps the final nail in his coffin wasn’t the Copa del Rey final defeat to Atletico Madrid, but the failure to capture the signature of Zinedine Zidane.
The great manager believed that the board were too slow to finalise transfers and the failure to capture the Frenchman, allowing him to slip through the net from Bordeaux to Juventus, was the final straw.
Zidane, of course, would go onto star for Real Madrid, scoring perhaps their greatest ever goals in their ninth Champions League triumph. All the while, Barca were still stuck on one.
