Even if a container manufacturer could retool all of their machines to try and make a round container, it would be harder and much more time consuming. This round shape would not be worth the trouble. So, many containers have the same basic square shape. All that the manufacturer has to do is adjust the length, height and width of a standard square box and these boxes are ready to ship.

Also, the cost to retool the machines would be cost-prohibitive for pizza restaurants. It’s all about overhead and keeping costs down as much as possible. There’s no reason to have such an expensive box for the carrying of the pizza.

Square boxes keep round pizza safer
A square box for a round pizza means that the dough stops in the corners and cannot slide all over the place. Having a square box for a round pizza is a good idea for helping to get the pizza to its destination in one piece.

Early pizza was square
The first mention of this dough dates back to around 1000 AD in Italy and it is said that the first version was in a square shape. Ancestral versions looked more like a flat bread with meats. This ancient shape may have something to do with the way the box eventually evolved.

The answer is actually quite simple: Square boxes are easier and less expensive to produce because they are assembled from one sheet of cardboard. They're easy to construct on-site, and can be easily stacked and stored in corners or in the freezer aisle. But square boxes are wasteful, and a circular pizza simply doesn't need all the extra space a square box provides.

Over the years, companies have tried to shake up the pizza delivery industry with round pizza box prototypes. In 2004, a man named John Harvey invented a round pizza box called the Presseal, which he believed trapped grease better than regular boxes and kept the pizza from sliding around. But finding manufacturers who saw the product as a solution and not simply a gimmick proved problematic.

In 2010, Apple filed a patent for a thin, round pizza container designed for personal pies, featuring eight ventilation holes to allow moisture to escape. While it has yet to be made publicly available, it is used by Apple employees to take their pizza from the food court to their desk without it getting soggy.

Most recently, World Centric, which creates certified compostable products for the food service industry, introduced Pizza Round, a plant-based compostable pizza box (made from sugarcane and bamboo). It has less packaging than a traditional box, as well as improved heat retention and air vents that help maintain crispiness. The pizza can be re-heated in the box (though we have an even better technique), the top doubles as a server, and the boxes nest to save storage space.

Pizza comes in different shapes and sizes across the world. But the round pizza is the most commonly eaten pizza pretty much everywhere.

There is a joke as to why pizza is round, has a square box but is cut into triangles. It’s a bit odd when you think about it! So I did some research into why we have all these different shapes.

You want the dough ball to be nice and neat so that when you stretch it out you don’t have thicker parts.

The easiest shape to do this? A ball of course. It would be harder to split a large piece of dough into 6 square pieces of dough!

But 6 ball-shaped pieces of dough can be done quickly, easily, and consistently.

The round ball can then be stretched out. You could stretch this into a rectangle but the easier way is to just stretch it outwards.

When you stretch a ball of dough, you stretch it from the center, so naturally, it creates a round shape.

Some people stretch it out even more by tossing the pizza dough. When the pizza dough is tossed and spun in the air, it receives centrifugal force which pulls it outwards.

This is the force received pulling away from the center as something spins – and is why the pizza gets bigger, thinner, and more round as you spin it
