Minecraft was started as an attempt by Markus Persson to learn 3D graphics programming by manually creating his 3D engine from the ground up. To accomplish this he decided to create the world's terrain out of a very simple structure; a Voxel(1). Even the skins for these would be made out of low-res (8-bit) images.

It went on to become the PC game smash hit of the decade.

(1) A Voxel is a Volumetric Pixel. Pixel = 2D, Voxel = 3D, or a pixel with volume.
