Last year's Game Awards brought a plethora of video game surprises and announcements, one of which was the long-awaited reveal of The Witcher 4. Though it wasn't too long, The Witcher 4's cinematic trailer confirmed a few key details about the game, such as an older Ciri being the sequel's primary protagonist. It's probably going to be a little while before fans have The Witcher 4 in their hands, and in the meantime, they might want to take a look at The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Announced earlier this month, The Blood of Dawnwalker is a dark fantasy action-RPG that will see players take control of Coen, a man with a vampiric curse who sets out to rid the kingdom of Vale Sangora of its new vampire overlords. There's no release window for The Blood of Dawnwalker just yet, but fans of The Witcher might want to keep their eye on the game for a few reasons.
Konrad Tomaszkiewicz worked at CD Projekt Red for 17 years. In those 17 years, Tomaszkiewicz worked on all three mainline Witcher games, being a director on The Witcher 3. Tomaszkiewicz was also the Design Director, VP of Game Development, and Head of Production on Cyberpunk 2077, the last CD Projekt game he worked on.
Tomaszkiewicz left CD Projekt Red in 2021 following allegations of workplace bullying. After a month-long internal investigation, the commission determined that Tomaszkiewicz was not guilty, but he decided to leave the studio regardless, stating that "a lot of people are feeling fear, stress or discomfort when working with me." When Tomaszkiewicz left CD Projekt Red he stated "I am going to continue working on myself" and that "Changing behavior is a long and arduous process, but I’m not giving up, and I hope to change."
In February 2022, Tomaszkiewicz formed a new studio named Rebel Wolves. This studio grew from just 20 employees to over 90 by the summer of 2024, with the team now including Tomaszkiewicz's brother Mateusz, Jakub Szamalek, Daniel Sadowski, and Bartlomiej Gawel, all of whom worked alongside Tomaszkiewicz during development of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to be the new studio's debut project.
The Blood of Dawnwalker's lengthy reveal trailer did a good job of giving fans a general overview of what they can expect from the game's story and themes, and Witcher fans might find they're treading on familiar ground. Much like The Witcher, The Blood of Dawnwalker will be a dark fantasy action-RPG set in medieval Europe that draws from Eastern European folklore.
The Blood of Dawnwalker will also dabble in themes of power, morality, and servitude, with its central story revolving around the kingdom of Vale Sangora, a land where vampire lords are forcing humans to pay a blood tax. The Blood of Dawnwalker is also said to be putting a focus on moral choices and political intrigue, two core elements of The Witcher franchise.
