Wind Swimmer Sculpture at Kitsilano Pool
The inspiration behind Wind Swimmer came from a chance encounter between the artist and an older man who regularly swam near Stanley Park. Struck by this individual's dedication, the artist, Taylor, decided to create a companion for him in the form of a sculpture. In 1993, a prototype of Wind Swimmer was crafted for the Artropolis exhibition and placed in Stanley Park. Unfortunately, it met an unfortunate fate, being damaged by a log.
However, undeterred, the Parks Board saw an opportunity for a second installation and secured a generous donor, Mary and Herb Auerbach. The current iteration of Wind Swimmer found its home at Kits beach in 1996. Notably, the mechanism of the sculpture was skillfully engineered to respond to strong winds exceeding 55mph by rotating sideways and slowing down, ensuring its stability and longevity.
In 1999, Wind Swimmer underwent a redesign, further enhancing its artistic and functional qualities.
