Windows 11 On M1 Ultra Mac Studio Using Parallels - Gaming Problems Config Problems Software Issues
In this video I'm talking about my experience of installing Windows 11 ARM on Mac Studio M1 Ultra using Parallels and the problems and issues I've come up against.
The first problem was that I couldn't get Parallels to select game only mode optimisation settings for my Windows 11 installation. There were also other issues with trying to selecting other base settings and environments for graphics based tasks such as design, CAD and graphics editing workflows.
Even though I configured Parallels to the 4 GPU and 8GB RAM setting that it said it required for running Game Only and Design mode, it still wouldn't do it. This would seem to suggest an issue with Parallels and the Mac Studio, maybe with the M1 Ultra chip.
Once in Windows 11 the first issue was that Parallels had changed my network settings and Windows 11 couldn't get an internet connection. Then the main software that I wanted to install, couldn't be run. I tried using Windows only video editing software but because this uses AVX2, Parallels and therefore Windows 11 couldn't install that software.
I also tried install BlueStacks 5 which is an Android emulator so I could install and play some Android games. This too wouldn't install. The 64 Bit version of BlueStacks 5 simply wouldn't launch the installer and the 32 Bit version, as seen in the video, tried to install from the launcher but run up against an install issue. This may well have been to do with the fact that BlueStacks 5 is designed for X86 that Windows 11 ARM can emulate but in this instance didn't. Or it was maybe down to a DirectX or OpenGL, Open CL issue.
I then tried to install Windows Games using Xbox Game Pass. This was very disappointing as any meaningful games such as Halo Infinite wouldn't even download, let alone install or run. This was typical of any modern, or AAA, games that I tried to install, they simply wouldn't even download.
Some less taxing games such as Minecraft and Asphalt did install and to be honest, played OK and looked very nice. Although, these types of games aren't really what I would want to play and I'd imagine that most other people looking to do the same thing would probably be mostly interested in playing modern flagship triple A games.
These gaming issues may well, and once again, be due to certain problems with DirectX, OpenGL/CL etc. and the inability to supply the necessary resources that are required for game and graphics rendering. Even if this type of virtual or emulated setup is physically able to supply the required hardware infrastructure and also the required software components. Things such as game installation and then the gameplay may well be stopped due to the lack of online game security and the various anti-cheat software and routines that are employed by most modern games and most certainly most online multiplayer games.
Anyway. Let me know in the comments if you think it is worth trying to run Windows 11 and various software, apps and games using the likes of Parallels or even translation software such as Crossover on Mac Studio.
Keep an eye on my channel as I will doing some tutorials showing how to install Parallels on Mac Studio, how to install Windows 11 on Mac Studio and how to install Crossover on Mac Studio for those interested in trying these things out.
