In this video I'm comparing the Mac Studio M1 Ultra vs MacBook Pro M1 Max specifically in a ProRes export speed test in DaVinci Resolve.
For this test I'm specifically testing the ProRes encoders on both the Max and Studio to see if the Ultra is faster than the Max as it has got twice the encoder and also decoder capabilities.
With this being a very specific test of the ProRes encoders, the project has just one track of media which is also ProRes, which means that both systems will be able to max out the encoders.
CPU and GPU performance on both the Mac Studio Ultra and MacBook Pro Max have no bearing whatsoever for this particular test with both the GPU and CPU only being used very lightly to manage the UI and basic internal timeline processing.
TO BE CLEAR. If this were a timeline that required any significant CPU and GPU processing whatsoever beyond simple handling of Resolve, then the computers would both be doing video processing which would slow down the pathway to the encoders. Once any appreciable CPU or GPU processing starts occurring then the buffered video data being sent to the encoder would slow down and have an adverse affect on the encode times as the encoders would not be operating at their maximum processing ability.
ONCE AGAIN. This is a speed test, nothing else.
The end results here show that although the Ultra has twice the encoding capabilities of the Max, there is absolutely no difference in encode times when encoding to ProRes with Resolve. Interestingly, the exact same thing happens with FCP.
What this proves is that the extra encoders on the Ultra are not being used in this specific test.
Whether things change further down the line and we see the extra encoders being used in parallel and shorten the encode times, remains to be seen.
