Wipeout - Cardinal Dancer - Techno Synth Cover (feat. Novation Circuit)
This is one I've actually been wanting to do for a while but I never felt like I could get it right. Some songs (like this one) just kind of don't work well with my "workflow" when I do covers. But the Novation Circuit is changing all that!
I usually don't enjoy using so-called "grooveboxes" because it's tedious, time consuming, and I don't get results I want. But with this thing I am having a blast and making stuff that I really like! AND it's super intuitive while still having a lot under the hood and being able to do a lot with the synth engines (which is really important to me.) Also, in the world of musician gear it's practically a budget item!
All you hear in this video is from the Circuit. I did mixing and overdubbing in Audacity and used the Zoom MS-70CDR for fx but all the synth sounds come from the circuit and all drum sequencing is done with stock drum samples (or "packs" I guess they're called officially by Novation?). I created and edited the patches myself and didn't use any sample packs or bundles or anything like that.
I guess I just wanted to do this one because I like the original song and wanted to see what would happen if I tried my take at a "real" techno track. It's a bit out of my comfort zone but I like filter sweeps and 4 on the floor heavy beats as much as the next guy so here it is!
The game's soundtrack was put together by Tim Wright who goes by CoLD SToRAGE. I hope I did the song justice and hope you enjoy listening to the song as much as I enjoyed putting it together!
STORY TIME!!!
I actually have quite bit of nostalgia for this game, not really for the gameplay but because I had it bundled in with our Sony Vaio family PC (I want to say in 1996?)! It had a 2MB graphics card which at the time was a BIG DEAL. Also, the game ran like SHIT compared to the PS1 version even though it came bundled with the PC, which was really weird! I spent way more time messing with the settings trying to get the game to run decent than I ever did playing the game! The only way it ran near 30fps was at 320x240 resolution with no texture filtering and it looked so pixelated and zoomed in that it was painful to play!
Later on, Wipeout XL came out and used 3DFx (I think?) and OpenGL like everything else and it looked fantastic on the PC! I never owned that one, but I had a demo and was amazed at how good it looked and played. I also spent quite a bit of time with Wipeout 3 and thought it was a really fun and challenging game that really pushed the ps1 to its limits.
