Wipeout Fusion is the first game in the Wipeout series to make its way to the PS2, and it's a high quality early PS2 racing title. It was also the only Wipeout game made with the PS2 in mind; Wipeout Pulse, which was released for the PSP, would get ported to the PS2 in PAL territories. It is one of Psygnosis' first games under their new name, Studio Liverpool (the first being "Formula One 2001").

Wipeout Fusion was met with mostly positive/above average scores, which actually means that it isn't as heralded as most other titles in the series, but considering that it was the first (and likely only) original PS2 Wipeout title, this is sort of understandable. The game looks fantastic and sounds enough like a Wipeout title, but the gameplay mechanics have been changed significantly from how modes played out (not to mention new modes) to the ability to upgrade cars and get alternate pilots, right down to the way cars handled, which, while sufficient in and of itself once grasped, didn't feel quite like its predecessors. It is often compared to an F-Zero title rather than a Wipeout game.

The A.I. in this game, while more aggressive than past games and with the sole intent of making you miserable, still seems to be a bit of a pushover once you upgrade any of your cars even a fair bit (we're not talking maxed-stats here, and most cars won't handle adequately without a few upgrades). While they can be dealt with using standard weapons, they're even more of a pushover if you unlock the hidden weapons (some being favorites from past Wipeout games) and Team Special Weapons. The game has a large number of tracks, a good selection of themes, a gallery, and codes you can use if you want to just jump right into the fun (you can't save cheat codes to your memory card however). One of the favorite additions to Wipeout Fusion is the "Zone" mode, where you keep racing while slowly getting faster and faster until you crash and burn. Wipeout Fusion has a widescreen feature.

This is a video showing the first AG circuit. Enjoy.
