Tips
Always be on the lookout for better equipment. There is no levelling up system in this game so your attack and defense stats are only as good as your equipment. Obtaining good equipment makes the difference in dungeons. Do you want to be the hunter or the hunted? If you're struggling, go grind for gold and purchase some good equipment!
Bonus rooms are great for money. When you die, they replenish. But if you quit your game (it autosaves) and then reload, the chests will be replenished. There are several chests that give you hundreds (even thousands!) of gold, so visiting them several times is a good idea.
The quit and reload strategy as above is useful for other scenarios. Are you about to die? Quit and reload to be back in The Village where you can heal. Just finished an Unknown area? Quit and reload or you'll have to walk back through the area. Miles away from a warp area? Quit and reload.
Hard mode - Enemies take more hits to defeat. The final areas of dungeons will have more yellow enemies who inflict lots of damage. And finally, there is a timer next to your health. Your health will periodically take a hit, so time is of the essence. This s particularly true near the start of the game when you only have two or three hearts.

Prologue

The Last Dungeon

Ironically named as it's the start of the game! As Hu-Man, proceed through and vanquish the enemies. When you reach a spring platform, take the upper ledge with the blue snake (taking the wrong turn in this dungeon makes you restart! Continue right and drop down the first hole you reach. On the next screen, drop down the left hole. Head left and up the steps. Keep going left until you reach a door. Hold up on the D-Pad to open and it's boss time already!

Boss: Meka Dragon

This is a relatively simple boss fight. The only issue here is with timing. Jump and slash at his head to damage him. Watch his movements and wait for him to finish his fire attack before going in for a strike. He will retaliate with his fire attack after you hit him, so be sure to jump out of the way!

Once he's defeated, collect as much cash as you can whilst avoiding the blue flame. If the money stops appearing, then let yourself be hit by the flame. You have just fallen victim to the dragon's curse! You are now in the form of Lizard-Man. Having dropped from eight hearts to one will pose a problem. Fortunately you still have your legendary armor and sword. Use your fire attacks to hit enemies from a short distance to avoid damage. Go right one screen, defeating every Cyclops that crosses you until you defeat a green one who will drop a key for the door on the far right. Take your time on the next screens to avoid falling blocks. Once you reach a dead end, wait for the blocks to fall to create a staircase. Jump out of the hole and go left to trigger a cut scene and begin the game proper!
Chapter 1 – Lizard-Man!

Controlling Lizard-Man

Lizard-Man has terrible defenses...No armor at this stage of the game will grant you much additional defenses. Starting this chapter you only have one heart and have now defaulted to the weakest armor and weapons in the game! Luckily, Lizard-Man's ranged attacks will help you avoid direct contact with enemies. Lizard-Man can also crouch and shoot fire which is helpful for dodging fireballs (no shield means no auto-blocking!) and hitting short enemies. Lizard-Man can smash breakable blocks (once the Thunder Ring is obtained) by hitting them from below whilst jumping a-la Super Mario! Finally, Lizard-Man is immune to lava, even without the Dragon Mail equipped.

You will find yourself in the village with the afore mentioned terrible equipment. You'll find yourself in the village a lot, so familiarise yourself with the place. From the starting point you can enter the door closest to you to meet the fortune teller. He will give you tips if you're stuck...but you're reading an FAQ so he's worthless :) or you can press Triangle to enter a retro password to cheat (see cheat codes further on if you want to take the fun out of the game!).

The next door leads to a well. This will also be the site of a transformation room allowing you to switch forms. Jump down the well and go right to reach the beach area. Don't worry about drowning, you can't! You just can't swim as Lizard-Man. The door at the entrance to the Beach area will take you back to the village.

Directly above the door to the beach is a shop. Here you can buy the Mithril set of equipment. Purchase these as soon as you can to add a few extra points to your stats. Kill a few enemies at the Beach to make some cash:
Mithril Sword: 15 gold
Mithril Shield: 32 gold
Mithril Armor: 44 gold
