Worst to Best: Ranking Nintendo's Home Console Controllers
Over the years, Nintendo has been known for crafting and designing some of the finest video game controllers ever made for home systems. One of the reasons why their launch titles tend to be loved so much is that they are developed side-by-side with the system and the controller for the best possible experience. But, as Primus once said on their album "They Can't All Be Zingers", not all of Nintendo's controllers are the same level of greatness as the others. With that in mind, we're ranking NIntendo's Home Console Controllers from worst to best.
Note: While I do love the Virtual Boy's controller, it is not a home console so I did not include it on this list. Also, this list is for pack-in controllers included with a console in North America, so Famicom, Super Famicom, NES Max or Advantage controllers aren't included.
My Ranking from Worst to Best:
8: Joy-Cons (too small, no D-Pad, Stick Drift)
7: Nintendo 64 ( Analog stick grinds itself to dust)
6: OG NES Controller (corners dug into hand)
5: Wii U Gamepad (hated the motion control demand of some games)
4: Wii Remote & Nunchuk (intuitive, versatile, just worked!)
3: NES Dogbone Controller (so much more comfortable, an improvement in every way)
2: Gamecube (great ergonomics, fantastic performance, one of the best!)
1: Super Nintendo Controller (Best button layout, great D-Pad, just the right number of buttons)
I have spoke about my love of the SNES controller for years, it is practically perfect in my view It's so good that not only can you trace the lineage of the Switch controllers back to it, you can also track Sony's DualSense and DualShock controllers back to the SNES Controller! If you know your gaming history, you know that the Nintendo Play Station was the disc-based CD-Rom drive for the SNES that included Sony-branded Super Famicom controllers. When the PlayStation came out, Sony tweaked the design to include 2 L and R shoulder buttons and added Grips and the PS1 controller was born!
