Rating A Better NES Controller: NES Advantage or NES MAX?
Back in the day, the original Nintendo Entertainment System controller set a new standard, especially when compared to the Atari 2600 controllers of the day. While beloved and well respected, Nintendo released 2 enhanced controllers for the NES, the NES MAX and the NES Advantage. Each provided different benefits and features of the original and each other, and I had an loved both. But is one truly better than the other, or are they just different?
NES Advantage
The NES Advantage is a classic arcade-style controller for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), released in 1987. Designed to be placed on a flat surface, it features a comfortable joystick and two buttons, A and B, on the right side. The controller is renowned for its turbo and slow-motion functions, which can be toggled on and off using dedicated buttons. The turbo function allows for rapid-fire button presses, while the slow-motion function can help with precise timing in certain games. The NES Advantage is a sought-after accessory for retro gaming enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy classic arcade-style games on the NES.
NES MAX:
The NES Max controller is a classic Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) controller with a few added features for enhanced gameplay. It features a standard D-pad and two buttons, along with a turbo button for rapid-fire action and a slider for precise directional control. The ergonomic design and comfortable grip make it ideal for long gaming sessions. While not as common as the standard NES controller, the NES Max offers a unique and nostalgic experience for retro gamers.
My Preference:
I legit loved both of these controllers, the Advantage because it was so similar to an arcade joystick and the Max because it was so comfortable and an improvement over the original. For games such as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out and Contra, the NES Advantage was what I preferred. For RC Pro-Am, Super Mario Bros 2, and similar games I preferred the NES Max.
Did you have these back in the day? Do you still have them? If you've used both, which do you prefer? Share your thoughts in the comments!
