WTF?! Wednesday #25 - Super Pitfall (NES)
How do you follow up one of the most successful games of the early days of video games?
If you're Activision and the game is the legendary 'Pitfall'...?! Not well.
Despite being its first title for the Nintendo Entertainment System, 'Super Pitfall' feels very much like a missed opportunity. The graphics are decent, but sketchy. The mechanics are twitchy and put you in more danger than needed. You have a weapon, but it's useless against 95% of the enemies you encounter.
And while non-linear gameplay is very much the norm in modern titles, it made games way more challenging than they needed to be 40 years ago. Navigating your way through the South American caverns to find both your lost friends and the great treasure it held...on just THREE tries...led to far more frustration than achievement.
So for this week's 'WTF?! Wednesday,' we go back to 1987 and see if we can conquer what's often pegged on the shortlist of 'Worst NES games of all time'!
