Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch. It is part of the eighth generation of the Pokémon video game series and serves as a prequel to Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (2006), their enhanced version Pokémon Platinum (2008), and their remakes Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (2021).
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action role-playing game that preserves the core gameplay of past entries in the main line series. The game is set in a bygone era of the Sinnoh region's history, when it was known as the Hisui region, long before the events of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and their remakes take place. The Mythical Pokémon Arceus plays a major role in the story.
Players can capture wild Pokémon in the overworld without engaging in battle, though some wild Pokémon must still be battled before being caught. Players can initiate battles by releasing their captured Pokémon near a wild Pokémon.Poké Balls in this era are made of wood and puff steam when a Pokémon is caught.
At the start of the game, three starter Pokémon options are available: Rowlet (the grass-type starter Pokémon from the Alola region), Cyndaquil (the fire-type starter Pokémon from the Johto region) and Oshawott (the water-type starter Pokémon from the Unova region). This makes Pokémon Legends: Arceus the first mainline game to feature starter Pokémon from different regions together. There are a total of 265 Pokémon species available, 242 excluding different forms of Pokémon.
► Build the region’s first Pokédex:
You are tasked with studying Pokémon to complete the region’s first Pokédex. To do this, you’ll need to catch wild Pokémon by sneaking up and throwing a well-aimed Poké Ball™. You can also toss the Poké Ball containing your ally Pokémon near a wild Pokémon to seamlessly enter battle.
► Newly discovered Pokémon:
In this era—long before the events of the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl games—you can discover newly added types of Pokémon.
► New regional forms:
Find newly discovered Pokémon like Wyrdeer, an evolution of Stantler, and new regional forms like Hisuian Growlithe, Hisuian Zorua, and Hisuian Zoroark.
► Noble Pokémon:
Encounter noble Pokémon, special Pokémon in the Hisui region that have received a mysterious blessing. These nobles are particularly powerful and are revered by the people of the region.
► Ride across untamed landscapes:
During your adventure, you’ll receive a Celestica Flute. You can play the flute to summon special Pokémon that will let you ride them. Riding these Pokémon on land, across water, or even through the skies will help you more freely explore the Hisui region.
