(Continued) The barmen points the trembling and impotent sonic rifle at the Deep One. It might as well be a prop. "WHY WON'T YOU FIRE! GODFUCKINGDAMNYOUFIRE!" As the whine from the Deep One's plasma core heart is about to rise beyond levels audible to human ear, the rifle gives in -- the air between it's muzzle and the Deep One ripples like water. There is no sound besides that of a half of the alien's abdomen exploding.

Deep One collapses on the floor. The whine is still going. An electric discharge from its trunk goes through the counter and through the barman, sending him into the wall directly behind him. The impulse from the shot spins the Deep One around and it is now facing the door leading to the parking lot. The charging sound comes on again.

The Gill Man, still frozen in the balancing pose, searches with his eyes for the rifle. It's somewhere behind the counter. Meanwhile, Betty is back on the ball. She's been observing the proceedings with a heart rate of 140, clenching her switchblade in the clammy palm. She purchased it thinking that one day she may have to use it against a man. Gill Man is a kind of a man. "Get him! He's unarmed!" Betty flips her table -- it feels immensely appropriate. Couple of brave barflies follow her lead. She snaps the blade out.
