"Go fuck yourself," Bulgakov spat. A soldier by the door tensed in preparation, but the commodore raised a restraining hand. "You had forty years to heed me and prepare, but now the terrors are coming out of the deep, suddenly the ravings of an old man matter to you. What do you think you could possibly offer me now?"

It threw him off totally, trapping his pre-emptive retort of contempt between his brain and his throat.

"What?"

"You predicted, down to the day, the timing of the first sea borne attacks. You killed a man you say would have merged, looted, and destroyed whole worlds, before his plans could come to fruition. You say you used to be X-COM, and not just a grunt either. I believe you. God forgive me for not believing sooner, but my own judgement is not important. Survival, Mr Bulgakov, it is all that matters now."

He stared at her for a long moment, face fixed in a stony expression that revealed nothing. He put out his hand.

"Call me Wolfgang, commodore Kolomyski."
