This is fondly remembered by many, and I can agree up to a point. I was a SNES guy so I didn't have this, but every time I picked it up, it was so frustratingly difficult. It was never my choice of game to play if I had anything else available. To me, the difficulty is still artificial. You just take damage from every direction possible even when there's no sense behind it.
But, once you get used to what's going to hurt you and how to approach things, it gets way better. It's not really my thing, but I can see why it's loved. Even when I don't like the game, the graphics are done so extremely well and it mixes perfectly with the Genesis' synth sounds...it's a perfect blend.
