I recommend playing on beta 15e since that's the version I'm currently using, and hopefully normal mode will feel a bit more friendly to new players, consider cinematic mode "very easy" at this point.
Backup and replace your ini in: Documents\My Games\XCOM - Enemy Within\XComGame\Config
