"Ninja Gaiden" begins in the fields of Japan, as a ninja in red armor named Ken Jô Hayabusa makes a stand against an arch-rival. The rival, known by many as Bloody Malth, charges at Ken. As their swords clash in mid-air, it is Malth who is left standing.

Meanwhile, back at the Hayabusa household, Ken's 21-year-old son Ryu, awaits his father's return to no avail. Fearing the worst, he finds a letter his father wrote to him, which instructs him to go to America should he not return. It also tells him to visit Walter Smith, an archaeologist.

Enraged at the apparent death of Ken Jô, Ryu equips himself with his blue armor, and takes the family heirloom, the Dragon Sword. With fire in his eyes, he vows revenge as he makes his way to America.
