XF5U Flying Flap Jack
a plane designed before it's time..
The XF5U was designed for near vertical take off as well as both high end and low end flying speeds. The XF5U could reach speeds of 500mph due to its short wingspan making it more aerodynamic. Air that would escape around the sides of the plane were forced back under the wing by placing the propellers far to the outsides of the wings. It might not look like it, but this plane actually handles fairly well!
It never made it to production due to a transition to rocket propulsion.. But this plane laid the ground work for vertical take off fighters like the harrier.
