Yakuza 0 is a sequel in one of the sega’s longest running series, an open world skull smashing smash hit and is an action adventure video game originally released on the playstation 3 and then ported to the ps4 in January 2017 the version im reviewing here is on steam released in august 2018.
The game is played in the first person perspective playing the protagonist of kazuma kiryu and recurring character goro majima, alternating between the two at predetermined points of the story.
You can roam free in a fictionalised recreation of tokyo’s kabukicho and osaka’s dotonbori areas respectively taking on side quests and battling enemies who attack you on the street, you can also occupy your time playing around with the minigames including fully playable versions of out run, super hang on, space harrier and fatazy zone respectively, you can also occupy your time completing certain objectives such as eating every dish at a restaurant and reaching a target score in a minicamp ( oh the procrastination).
By doing this you can earn special completion points currency known as cp can be spent at a shrine to receive adittional bonuses such as character upgrades and special items.
Character customization and growth is similar to the system in isshin with abilities earned by buying them off of a skills tree that is gradually unlocked during the game. Money is the main currency that you use to do this giving you more of an incentive to rack up the cash and basically time waste and stray from the story giving you every opportunity to stray from the main story which I have done on countless occasions.
My favourite part of the game is using side businesses to earn more money in hopes you can level up more quickly investing in real estate, the cabaret club and completing side quests allowing you to more easily progress with earning piles and piles of money.
The biggest selling point of 0 is the addition of fighting styles that can be switched in the middle of battle balancing your brawler style to a more quick approach, beast style can also be used to allow you to use heavy weaponry you have the option to unlock and additional legendary fighting styles that I won’t go too much into because I want you to actually play the game.
The plot sees your two characters involved in a power struggle for all the dark organizations across japan in order to find out the truth and maintain their own innocence and safety they set out to investigate.
The graphics are console perfect, console perfect depending on your graphics card, I did however have an issue with loading the initial game prior to the update which fixed all the buggy loading issues from the initial start, the combat is amazing, as you beat your way into an initial payday, I do find that the game is best played using a gamepad asim not part of the pc master race.
The sprites are lifelike and feels amazing, as I spoke about in my previous review it reminded me a lot of Shenmue in terms of its foundation but leveld up to 1000, all dialogue is native Japanese which ive been told is due to the fact that sega never initial felt that the game would do well in the states, the soundtrack is sublime, and adds to the gameplay.
The story is where this game shines, showing character growth and an unwinding road that leads you on rails to where you need to be, you will be hand held through various parts of the game there are moments where the pacing stalls due to trying to find out where you need to go.
Overall yakuza 0 gives you a lot for the price of a lunch you can grab yakuza 0 for an awesome 14.99 (uk) or 20 bucks us now as always I give my games a rating between 1 and 5 and from 1 being the worst and 5 being the best I give yakuza 0 an awesome 5.
With over 30 hours of gameplay I suggest you give this game a go even if you’re not a console hog such as myself.
