Shenmue 1 and 2 HD Reloaded complete edition is the remastered and polished version of a game that is highly sought after by collectors and the precursors to the up and coming Shenmue 3, Created by Yeo Suzuki and published By Sega.
You play the character Ryo Huzuki as you try to track down your fathers killer, this takes you on a journey of faffing about as you have to talk to everyone (this is worse than assassins creed), the first game to popularise the quick time event genre of gaming a system that has been done to death, it’s a unique experience that fans of the originals will love, still blocky, voice work is pretty much the same and the pacing is rather slow but there is a lot of content here, controls are pretty similar to its dream cast counterpart with different buttons mapped but with the same familiar feel, you have a big open world to explore, the same cast of characters who you need to feed for information and money is an issue here so you have to find ways to grind at a sluggish pace to help further ryo’s story what I will say is if you are a casual gamer youll probably be best served in taking on this game in chunks, playing each part as you migrate ryo through the big open world taking time to either visit the arcade and play some classics such as space harrier and hang on and give yourself time to play until completion.
I do need to address some complaints here by reiterating that the graphics are uprezzed from the originals, it’s the same blocky characters, same voice work and same sluggish mechanics from the 90’s its not going to be as smooth as the yakuza series in which my opinion took the shemue experience and built upon that with its bigger open worlds and more experiences to make sure that you aren’t stuck in monotony.
Now lets get down to the score, as a always I give every game I review a score between one and a five and with one being the worst and five being the best I give Shenmue the complete hd collection a solid 4.5 it is a chore to get through but with a polarizing story it will leave you wanting more atleast until the release of Shenmue 3
