A playthrough of Nintendo's 1992 puzzle game for the NES, Yoshi.

This video shows both game modes. I start with the A Type game, playing until I get a game over on level 28. At 39:53 I play the B Type game until I get a game over on level 35. (If there are more awards to win after the P-button, I've yet seen them!)

Yoshi, known as Mario & Yoshi in Europe and Yoshi no Tamago (lit. "Yoshi's Egg") in Japan, was one of several puzzle games to feature Mario on the NES. Despite being arguably as good, it wasn't ever quite as well-known or respected as Dr. Mario or Yoshi's Cookie, and that's a shame. It's a simple, fun game that'll keep you addicted for a good while.

It's a falling block-style game, but instead of moving the blocks themselves, you control Mario at the bottom of the screen. As the enemies fall, Mario can move the objects already on the playing field by swapping adjacent columns. To eliminate the enemies, you need to either vertically match two like pieces or capture pieces between the halves of a Yoshi egg.

The more enemies you can sandwich between the egg halves, the larger the hatched Yoshi will be and the more points you'll get, but if any of your columns extend beyond the top of the playing field, it's an instant game over.

The difficulty is balanced nicely (though luck does inevitably play a larger role as you reach the higher levels), the graphics are clean, and the music is super-cheerful - it's a game that knows how to induce a smile. I got it for Christmas the year it came out and I absolutely loved it.

Yoshi was the first game that was created by Game Freak in direct collaboration with Nintendo, and it marked the beginning of a very fruitful relationship. Just think, without Yoshi, there'd be no Pokémon.

Crazy thought, isn't it?
