Here in america, most larger cities, universities, and hospitals have surplus locations. These places serve to essentially liquidate any excess inventory government operations might have. For example most united states colleges refresh their school computers every 5 years, weather they’re performing adequately or not. What do they do with thousands of old computers? They throw them in a warehouse for people to purchase at a reduced rate.

Since government computer orders are standard, you end up with a lot of the same computers cycled in and out at the same time. In 2011, most government operations acquired these dells and these HP computers, and in 2006, most American hospitals acquired these gateways. Prices are typically standardized as well, at least where I am. This 2006 gateway can be found at any nearby surplus for $11, which includes keyboard mouse and any cables you’d need.

Gateway, not to be confused with Gateway Church or Gateway Worship TV (??). Anyway Gateway was an influential computer company which was founded 1985. They specialized in budget computers, and they were one of the first of their kind. In the 80’s and 90’s, computers were a luxury item, and gateway was the first to turn luxury into commodity. Their success skyrocketed in the late 90’s as they started the trend of shipping entire setups instead of just the stand alone computer. Sadly, the once iconic brand had fizzled out by the 2000’s and was bought out by Acer in 2007, making this one of the last computers produced by gateway and not just a rebranding of Acer.

On the specs side of things, this computer has just about what you’d expect out of 2006. It has a Core2Duo E6400, 2GB RAM, an ATI X1300XT Graphics Card, and Dual 80GB hard drives configured in RAID. This was a high end productivity machine in 2006, and costed an estimated $1,600 dollars.
