Zenless Zone Zero - All Characters Combat Compilation (Equalizing Test Beta)
Zenless Zone Zero is an upcoming free-to-play action RPG from miHoYo, creators of Genshin Impact and the Honkai series. I was invited to participate in this beta, and having never played one of miHoYo's games before, I thought it would be a good opportunity to try one out.
As far as I know, Genshin Impact is an open world game. Zenless Zone Zero goes in a different direction and plants you in a hub world, with everything you need placed around the town. It's basically like Monster Hunter, which I, for one, prefer over a giant open world. You can just jump right into mission after mission with little to no time wasted in between. The missions in this game have a pretty unique structure, too. You start out on a grid, and you move across it while completing puzzles and dealing with various gimmicks, until you bump into an enemy on the grid. Then you're taken into a linear action game stage. I played just about every mission in the beta, and they really did a great job mixing up the "grids" - I don't recall any two of them feeling exactly the same (though they do reuse gimmicks, just in different ways). Having a mini-game in between stages could have ended up feeling tedious, but I think they did a good job with it.
This game is loaded with story, character interactions, customization, and all the stuff you'd expect to see in an RPG. But personally, I'm mainly interested in the combat, which is what this video is all about. Right now the game has 14 playable characters (which I'm sure will increase over time), and if you've played your fair share of action games, you'll notice inspirations from a lot of the genre's heavy hitters. So with such a large cast of characters, they're obviously not going to give them giant movelist. In fact, they kinda go in the opposite direction. Each character has a type of combat gimmick that sets them apart from everyone else - they do a pretty good job with that - but they typically only have one or two combos to use. Instead of mixing things up with one character, you're expected to frequently tag out with the other two characters in your party. It works well and the combat is fun, but I would like to see them expand it a little. Even one more combo for each character, or jumps and air combos, would add a lot to the game I think. But it's still fun the way it is.
I don't know exactly when this game will be available for everyone, but if you're into these free-to-play, games as a service type games, then this is one to keep an eye on. Give it a shot!
