Zillion II: The Tri Formation (Master System) Playthrough
Playthrough of Sega's 1987 action-platformer for the Sega Master System, Zillion II: The Tri Formation.
Zillion II: The Tri Formation for the Sega Master System is a fast-paced action-platformer and sequel to the original *Zillion*, offering a more arcade-style experience with an emphasis on speed and combat. Players take control of the hero J.J., tasked with stopping the evil Norsa Empire by navigating through enemy-filled stages using a powerful transforming motorcycle known as the Tri Formation. Unlike its predecessor, which focused on exploration and puzzle-solving, this sequel adopts a more straightforward approach, focusing on side-scrolling shooting and platforming action.
The gameplay alternates between high-speed motorcycle sections and traditional on-foot platforming levels. In motorcycle stages, J.J. speeds through enemy bases while blasting waves of foes, dodging obstacles, and collecting power-ups. These segments are fast and intense, requiring quick reflexes to survive the relentless enemy attacks. When on foot, J.J. must traverse more confined areas, jumping across platforms and engaging enemies with his laser gun. The game also introduces the ability to upgrade the Tri Formation into a more powerful armored suit, providing additional firepower and mobility.
Visually, Zillion II boasts colorful graphics with detailed enemy designs and futuristic environments that align with the game's sci-fi theme. The character and vehicle sprites are well-animated, and the scrolling backgrounds create a sense of speed and urgency in the motorcycle sections. However, the game’s level variety is somewhat limited, with repetitive environments and enemy types that can make the gameplay feel monotonous over time.
The soundtrack features energetic and catchy tunes that complement the fast-paced action, maintaining a sense of urgency throughout the game. The sound effects, including gunfire and explosions, add to the arcade-like atmosphere, although they can become repetitive during longer play sessions.
While Zillion II: The Tri Formation delivers a fun and action-packed experience, it lacks the depth and exploration elements that made the original Zillion unique. The increased focus on combat and linear progression may appeal to players looking for a more immediate and straightforward challenge, but it might disappoint fans of the first game’s more intricate design. Despite this, it remains an entertaining title that showcases the Sega Master System’s capabilities and offers an exciting, if somewhat repetitive, sci-fi adventure.
