Trick R Treat exploded on the scene in 2007 and has quickly become a fan favorite among horror fans - And really how can you not love this guy. That being said, let’s check out some thing you didn’t know about Trick ‘r Treat:

10: The origins for Sam and Trick r Treat can be traced back all the way to 1996 to an animated short entitled Season Greetings.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Trick ‘r Treat director, Michael Dougherty, had this to say:

“The original inspiration is that I am obsessed with Halloween as a cultural event, as a holiday, as a weirdly dark ancient holiday with genuinely sinister, strange roots, and that all got embodied in Sam. He was part of an animated short film that I did at NYU way back in 1996, which was completely hand drawn and painted, you know, old school animation style.“

And in regards to creating the iconic Sam.

“ … Sam was the origin point and he just continued to kind of pop up over the years in my greeting cards, I’m working on a script he’d show up in the margins, so he’s been with me for a very long time.”

9: And speaking of Sam. Casting the pint sized monster according to director Michael Dougherty was a lot of fun and he auditioned many children but it was the then 7 year old Quinn Lord that impressed the director. In his audition Lord improvised a bit he called “Sam and His Kitten” which embodied the characters menace and eerily sweet nature. He instantly got the part.

8: Though Quinn was in the costume for the bulk of his scenes two stunt people were involved in the production including stunt woman Suzi Stingl who ironically worked on Thirteen Ghosts (which, we’ll get into more about that later) Stingl was used mainly in the fight between Sam and Mr. Kreeg.

7: Christine the car makes a cameo. The 1958 Plymouth Fury car made famous by the 1983 film based on a Stephen King novel can be seen in the background during the “School Bus Massacre” segment.

6: For the zombie kids in the “School Bus Massacre” segment actors with actual missing limbs were used and according to the director they formed their own bond on set with each other.

5: Originally the film was slated for a wide release in October of 2007 however it was mysteriously pulled and shelved for a whopping 2 years and would finally be released later only to be dumped on DVD in 2009. Still, there’s several reasons why the film was buried: The studio was nervous about competing with Saw IV – And Warner Brothers were still dealing with the box office bomb Superman Returns which was co-written by Michael Dougherty.

4: Several brand named items were playfully named after members of the production including the liquor bottle Mr Kreeg uses as a weapon of which the brand was named after DP, Glen MacPherson. Also, the infamous candy bar that saves Mr. Kreeg’s life, LHOTKA’S was named after the co-producer Peter Lhotka.

3: Before it was known as Trick R Treat the film went through many titles including: Seasons Greetings, Halloween Terrors, Jack O Lanterns, October the 31st and Trick or Treat. To avoid any confusion over the 1980s film Trick or Treat, it was changed slightly.

2: It was actually Brian Cox who came up with the look of his character, the grizzled, bitter Mr. Kreeg. He drew inspiration from a wide range of things but mainly rocker David Crosby and Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia.

1: Trick r Treat has lots of little inside jokes and references sprinkled throughout.

When Brian Cox’s character Mr. Kreeg says “You gotta be fucking kidding me” when Sam's hand springs to life independently-this is a nod to a similar line in The Thing (1982). The character named Laurie might also be a direct reference to Halloween another John Carpenter film. Actor C Ernst Harth has a cameo as Laurie’s blind date-you know the giant baby. In the film Thirteen Ghosts (2001) the same actor plays a ghost called “Ghost Child”.
Rhondas House is modeled after Carrie White’s house from the Stephen King adaptation of Carrie.
