Halloween season is upon us and itâs time to revisit everyoneâs favorite witches: The Sanderson sisters! In this list, weâre going to be taking look back at Hocus Pocus and provide you with 10 things you may have not known about the movie.
10: In an interview with actor Doug Jones, who played Billy, he stated that the moths that come out of his mouth was in fact real and not CGI.
9: Out of all the movies sheâs made, Bette Midler stated that Hocus Pocus is her personal favorite.
8: In a strange case of life imitating art, actress Sarah Jessica Parker actually had a witch in her family tree. In the show âWho do you think you Are?â It was discovered that Parkerâs tenth great grandmother was arrested in Salem and was accused of witchcraft.
7: Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio turned down the part of Max Dennison. Instead, he appeared in the indie hit film: Whatâs Eating Gilbert Grape?
6: In another bit of alternate casting, Rosie OâDonnell was offered the role of Mary Sanderson. The offer to work with Bette Midler was tempting for sure but she ultimately declined. The role of course went to Kathy Najimy.
5: The TV show Friends and Hocus Pocus have something in common. It may be hard to believe but itâs true. The same fountain Dani and Allison dance in front of when they burn the Sanderson sisters - is you guessed it - the same fountain in the opening of the intro for Friends.
4: Michael Myers makes a cameo ⊠sort of. He and a clown â a cool nod to John Carpenterâs Halloween, can be seen in front of the âDevils houseâ.
3: You`d think being in a flying harness would be a pain in the witch, however, actress Sarah Jessica Parker has stated that she actually enjoyed it. In fact, she would take a copy of the New York Times to read in the device between breaks.
2: You might be surprised to learn that Hocus Pocus was not a hit upon its release. However, itâs gained a loyal cult following and is a seasonal staple among young and old.
1: Originally, Director Mick Garris had written a story treatment, which was very different than what made it to screen. Key changes were making the characters younger and making it less kid friendly and scarier. In an interview with our very own staff writer Michael Vaughn for his own personal blog; Mr. Garris had this to say.
âIt became much more of a broad comedy than I had intended. It always had humor, but I wanted it to be scary, too. Also, I think Halloween has much more of an impact on a 12-year-old than a 16-year old. Youâre really in a state of change at 12 that seems more momentous, and these situations have more potency then.â
Reportedly Garris was unhappy with the final result. When asked how he felt about it he said in the same interview.
âIâve become more sanguine with it over the years. When people tell me they love the movie, I have learned to just say âthank youâ.â
