Everyone’s favorite nightmare fuel, Pennywise, is back and in celebration, Talk Horror presents a list of Ten Things you didn’t know About IT (2017).
#1: Actor Bill Skarsgard was born in 1990 - only three months and 9 days before the It Miniseries was released.
#2: This may come as a surprise to anyone over the age of 20, but the cast of kids in the new IT remake actually had to be taught how to ride a bicycle. The crew even had to set-up their own little bicycle training school for the kids.
#3: Actors from the original miniseries Marlon Taylor, Jarrod Blanchard, and Brandon Crane who played Mike, Henry, and Ben in the 1990 adaptation, reached out to their remake counterparts during production, and later reported that they were pleased with the young actors.
#4: Before it came to fruition, the IT remake had been a hot topic for quite some time. Throughout that time, the rumor mill was in full swing and there were numerous actors rumored to take on the infamous role of Pennywise The Dancing Clown. These actors included Johnny Depp, Tom Hiddleston, Jim Carrey, Jackie Earle Haley, Willem Dafoe, and even Magic Mike himself: Channing Tatum.
#5: Originally, the Duffer brothers, then mostly known for their work on Wayward Pines and the under-the-radar outbreak film Hidden, wanted to direct. However, they were not considered bankable enough to helm such a big project at the time the film was in talks. They would go onto creating the mega-hit series Stranger Things for Netflix, which, in a bit of irony, stars Finn Wolfhard - Richie in the It remake.
#6: Bill Skarsgard purposefully refused to meet the teenage actors until he was in full Pennywise makeup and ready to shoot his scenes, in hopes of bringing out a more genuine sense of fear in their performances. We can only guess how well this worked on Finn Wolfhard, who is reported to have an intense fear of clowns
#7: Skarsgard was plagued with constant nightmares all throughout filming, supposedly stemming from becoming so entrenched in Pennywise’s character
#8: Stephen King is notorious for not holding back his thoughts on adaptations of his work, so fans were excited to hear that after he attended a private screening of 2017’s It, he was delighted, and said - quote “the producers did a wonderful job”
#9: A huge change from the novel and mini-series is the fact that the protagonists’ childhood scenes are set in the 80s rather than the 50s. This could be an attempt to cut costs that it’d take to make the planned Part 2 a period film, as well as also taking advantage of the contemporary surge in 1980s nostalgia.
#10: Tim Curry’s Pennywise the Clown makes a cameo! Sort of. When Richie enters the clown room seen in the trailer, a dummy dressed as the 1990s iteration of Pennywise can be seen on the floor.
